Nobodies

Goals for this Week’s Study:

  1. Review Sunday Morning’s Sermon.
  2. Challenge people to accept the fact that they are a NOBODY that God wants to make a SOMEBODY that He will use to reach EVERYBODY!
  3. Encourage group members to sign up to be baptized if they’ve never been before. Next Sunday (May 1st) we will be having a baptism at the new church property. It’s going to be awesome! They can go to www.betterlife.church/baptism to get signed up.

Getting Started:

Open your group with prayer.

One of the most challenging things to accept about ourselves is that even in the middle of our less than perfect lives, He still wants to use us to help others and proclaim Jesus everywhere we go.

DISCUSS: Have you ever let a lie stop you from doing something you thought the Lord was laying on your heart to do? What was that lie?

Examples (to get people talking):

  • You aren’t good enough to tell someone about Jesus...
  • You don’t know enough about the Bible…
  • Surely God wants someone else to do that…
  • Maybe I’ll do it tomorrow…

Scripture:

Below you will find the scripture Pastor Daniel used on Sunday. You can use it as a reference or to read through together for deeper study of God’s Word.

1 Corinthians 1:26-31 (MSG)

Take a good look, friends, at who you were when you got called into this life. I don’t see many of “the brightest and the best” among you, not many influential, not many from high-society families. Isn’t it obvious that God deliberately chose men and women that the culture overlooks and exploits and abuses, chose these “nobodies” to expose the hollow pretensions of the “somebodies”? That makes it quite clear that none of you can get by with blowing your own horn before God. Everything that we have—right thinking and right living, a clean slate and a fresh start—comes from God by way of Jesus Christ. That’s why we have the saying, “If you’re going to blow a horn, blow a trumpet for God.”

Study Questions:

Pastor Daniel made the statement that “you are a NOBODY that God wants to make a SOMEBODY that He will use to reach EVERYBODY!”

  1. Do you ever feel like a NOBODY? For those that are Christians, what was your life like before you knew Christ?
  2. For Christians, how has Jesus changed your life since He made you a SOMEBODY?
  3. Has Jesus ever used you to reach someone else? Ask people to share if they are comfortable.

This has been His plan all along. When Jesus was recruiting the 12 disciples everyone would have figured the Pharisees (religious elite) as the most qualified for these positions. After all, these 12 men would be responsible for building the Church upon the foundation that Jesus laid. Not only did Jesus NOT chose them, he chose NOBODIES (fishermen, tax collectors, sinners, etc.) to be His disciples.

This was also the case in the story Pastor Daniel read from John 6. The scripture is included below:

A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went, because they saw his miraculous signs as he healed the sick. Then Jesus climbed a hill and sat down with his disciples around him. (It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration.) Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?” He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do. Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money to feed them!” Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up. “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”
  1. What are the obstacles preventing people from being used by Jesus to reach the world?
    • Relationship w/ Jesus (press in on this if appropriate)
    • Love (Obedience) – Take your first step of being baptized!
  2. What are some principles we can learn from the story of the little boy Jesus used to feed the huge crowd (probably 15,000+) referenced in John 6?
    • Be close to Jesus – the little boy showed up to see what Jesus would do.
    • Be willing to surrender what he had to be used by Jesus.
    • Trust Jesus to take what you have and use it!
  3. What prevents you from being close, surrendering, and trusting Jesus to use YOU to reach a lost and dying world?
  4. What are some practical steps we can do TODAY to begin putting these principles into action and start being used by Jesus?
    • Get close to Jesus! (Get into His WORD, commit to attending church weekly, start serving, get baptized, etc.)
    • Take stock of what YOU have.
    • Surrender & Trust!

Final Thoughts:

  • The NEED is HUGE!
  • You can’t help everyone experience a better life through Jesus Christ, but you can help someone!
  • You’re not perfect…so what?
  • When we all focus on WHAT we have and WHO He has placed around us, then we can truly reach EVERYONE!

5. Ask people to share about their experience participating in the Supply Drive. Tons of pics are on Better Life Church’s Facebook if you want to share some results.
