Dave Ramsey is Crazy

Dave Ramsey is crazy. After watching one of his first online "Financial Peace University" segments, you’ll figure that out quick. When I did it, I was excited to learn to get out of debt. I knew I didn’t want debt anymore. Continuing with the rest of his program: Save. Yeah, ok, that’s good I guess. Invest. Ok, I do want to retire someday! College fund for the kids. Yes, but only if their scholarships don’t pan out! Pay off the house early. Yes, please! Build wealth and give it away! What? I wanted the building wealth part but definitely not the giving part. Why would he want us to go through all this work just to give it away?

It didn’t make sense.

Until you actually try it.

It is more blessed to give than to receive.
— Acts 20:35b

Tithing will change your life. It will make you more appreciative of what God gives you and will teach you to trust Him more. When you don’t see your money as yours anymore, you tend to manage it better (John 3:27).

Giving brings joy. Not even just giving to the church, giving in general. What would it look like to have a blessing line in your personal budget? When you see a need, you could meet it right away. You could pray regularly for God to present you with opportunities to bless others. You could share these opportunities with your kids so they could learn to do the same. What would it be like if everyone had a giving heart?

Trusting in God gets easier. Your first experience tithing can be scary. Many don’t even think you could do it and make it financially. But when you get to the end of the month and all of your needs are met, you’ll trust God in all the other areas of your life. God will prove Himself true. When you can’t immediately see how God will provide for a situation, but you make it through, you will begin to learn that He will provide and that you can trust Him. (Proverbs 3:5-6, 2 Samuel 7:28)

Because you give, you receive. You don’t give to get. You give to be obedient to God. And because you are obedient, He will reward you (Proverbs 11:24-25). But God determines the blessing. It’s not always with financial gifts. Sometimes it’s with joy. He even rewards with healing, wisdom, freedom from worry, or peace with your family.

Dave Ramsey is crazy. But he’s also right.
